Last week in our Technology & Innovation Management class at IE Business School, we had the pleasure to have John McGeachie, VP Sales at Evernote. John introduced to us what is Evernote, the product characteristics and the strategy that the company is following to make their product successful. I enjoyed the presentation because John was very open to any type of questions. Moreover, He made it clear that the company makes profits if the costumer loves their product, and not by selling data of the costumers like other companies.

Evernote’s mission is to make easy to remember things from your everyday life using your devices. So, it’s very simple, with this application you will be able to takes notes, but the attractive is that it synchronizes the information with all your devices so you can have it everywhere. Furthermore you can add ink notes (drawings), attach documents, among other things. If you attach a document, one of the cool features is that when you search for a keyword within your notes, the application will also search inside the attachments.

I have tried the application for about 7 days and my experience has been very positive. I’m impressed by the indexing algorithm because it searches real fast for keywords in your notes (I already tried with many notes!). The application is very generic so you can be creative in how to use it. For example, I am using one notebook for notes related to classes, and I tag them with the ‘MBA’ keyword to find them fast. Additionally I have a notebook for bookmarks that I take using the Web-clipping extension for Chrome. Lastly, I have a ‘general’ notebook where I store pending things and other stuff that doesn’t fit anywhere else. I have seen in Youtube people using Evernote to store contacts or to use the GDT methodology. It’s up to you how to use it!

Since no one is perfect, this is my wish-list for the Evernote team:

  • To be able to combine normal and ink notes. I believe when people take notes they use both modes.
  • Pin a note option. I have a note where I have the things I have to do for the week. It would be great that I can always have that note on the top of the list.
  • Add a map object in a note. When taking notes regarding trips, it adds value to be able to add the actual map of the places you are going to visit. To be more specific, I’m talking about the Google Maps API.
  •  When you add an image into a note, there is no re-size option! I take pictures with a 18 Mb camera, so the resolution is very high. It would be great if I can re-size the image within Evernote. Blogs like WordPress allow you to do that, so I believe it’s feasible.

Heineken is one of the pioneers of digital advertising for the last years. In 2011 they were the first brand to sign a long-term collaboration with Google, reinforcing the idea that the brand understands the challenge to provide new services in order to remain relevant. Google and Heineken seal ad partnership

You can reach the brand by mainly 3 channels:  Company website, twitter account and the facebook page.

The company website has a very cool design and what it impresses me is that there is a special version of the site for about 50 countries. In the webpage you can get to know the history of the company and you are able to watch all the ads and campaigns that they currently have. I recommend you to watch all the videos; they are very creative and fun to watch!

It surprises me that the twitter account is not very active and still they have 84 in Klout! They only have 2320 tweets and about 58k followers. To compare, my professor at IE Business School, has the small amount of 19k tweets and 177k followers…

Now let’s talk about the facebook page. In this channel the company interacts a lot with the community. They have 12.652.567 people who like the page and 31 of those are my friends:

Overall, Heineken has been doing a great job positioning the brand in the Web. They reach the younger generations understanding the internet trends, but they also reach the older generations promoting themselves in the traditional media.

Is Google evil?

Have you ever wondered what Google knows about us?

Well here is a hint… Google knows about me:

  • Complete name
  • Date of birth
  • What I like from my friends (and who are my friends of course)
  • Any type of post (twitter, wall, buzz, blog)
  • My contacts
  • All my emails and conversations
  • My schedule and important dates
  • The documents I share with friends
  • Books that I’m reading
  • My current location and the places I frequently visit
  • The music that I listen
  • The websites that I visit and my favorite ones.
  • The videos that I have watched.
  • My albums
  • The places that I have traveled.

And that’s all  🙂

This doesn’t mean that Google is evil because I allowed them to access that information. As long as Google keep it private it’s not that big deal. Also this information allows Google to provide a very personalized service to me.

What do you think? Does Google knows way too much about us?
